Spyware Protection
(presented by www.spyware-remover-free.net - spyware remover)

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

Spyware protection is a very dynamic field that is continuously changing. As new spyware are released into the market, updated versions of spyware protection programs are also released. Thus, the race to block newer versions of spyware continues endlessly. This is further compounded when a spyware is released that is disguised as an anti-spyware product. Such frauds and pranks can be avoided by selecting a reputed company for buying or downloading the anti-spyware product.

Some of the reliable companies that offer this protection are Microsoft and Spybot - Search and Destroy. Preventive software is also available in the market that prevents any spyware from entering the system. Some other simple steps can be followed in order to prevent spyware from entering the system. These include blocking file types that are spyware carriers such as EXE, COM, PIF, SCR, VBS, SHS, CHM and BAT file types. Another step is to block any file type that has more than one extension such as LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.VBS or ANNAKOURNIKOVA.JPG.VBS. Another preventive measure is to check and scan all the files by sending them to IT professionals, especially if the system is used for business purposes.

Other technological steps that can be taken in order to remove or detect spyware are constantly upgrading and downloading the latest versions of anti spyware programs. E-mails and other incoming data can also be constantly checked so that junk and spam mails can be prevented from entering the system. Computers connected to the outer world can be appropriately protected from Internet threats using firewalls. Notebook PC’s and remote home workers should be included since they also need firewall protection and might not be able to take help of a central firewall inside a company.

Spyware protection is becoming a necessity rather than a luxury because of the ever-expanding state of the Internet and the growing Internet crimes. Many companies and people have suffered losses due to spyware and protection is an unavoidable choice that Internet users have to make.

Protect Yourself From The IRS Email Scam and Other Email Fraudsters
(presented by www.spyware-remover-free.net - spyware remover)

Friday, February 16th, 2007

Your email inbox can be a hazardous place. Most of us deal with the annoyance of spam emails trying to coax us into buying everything from viagra to stocks, but among those annoying yet relatively harmless emails there may be a message or two from a sender with much more diabolical intentions. You may have heard of the IRS email scam or the UK Lottery scam. These fraudsters attempt to obtain your personal and financial information for a number of purposes including credit fraud and even identity theft.

There are many types of email scams. Here are four common ploys.

IRS refund scam
This is an email that appears to come from the IRS which states that you are due a refund and gives a link to a site where you fill out a refund form. Of course, the site and the form are fake, serving only to deliver your info to the scammer.

Lottery scam
This scam plays on everyone’s dream of winning big in the lottery. The email will claim that you have won a huge cash prize and your private data is needed to process your claim to your winnings…but do you remember ever buying a ticket?

Inheritance scam
This email claims to be from a lawyer of a deceased person, or a soon-to-be-deceased person themselves, stating that you are the chosen heir to a vast fortune. Of course, they will need your banking details to make the deposit, probably a small transfer fee also!

Employment scam
This email seems to be a legitimate offer of employment processing international payments. A check is paid to your bank account and you deduct a commission and send on 90%. The check either turns out to be fake, or you get arrested for money laundering.
How to protect yourself:
Never divulge personal information in an email. Officials from banks, the government and similar institutions will never ask you for private details in an email. If someone does, be suspicious.

Never download or open attachments on suspicious emails. They may contain viruses or trojans that could allow a hacker to access your computer.

Check the return email address. Banks don’t use hotmail!! If the return address is a free webmail address, be suspicious.

If you are unsure about an email you receive, there are several sites like http://email-scams.info that have lists of scam emails currently in circulation. Check and see if the email you got is on one of those lists.

Always remember the old chestnut…if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Keep Your Data Safe Behind a Firewall
(presented by www.spyware-remover-free.net - spyware remover)

Firewalls

Computer viruses! Worms! E-mail viruses! Trojan Horses! The media is always full of stories about computer viruses infecting computers all over the world, or companies scrambling to fix security holes in their software by releasing security updates. What can businesses or individuals to protect their computer? Installing a firewall may be one answer.

The Importance of Having a Firewall

While the first computer viruses were transported from computer to computer by floppy disks, computer viruses today can cover the globe in the blink of an eye over the Internet. And they’ve probably made it to your computer. You have likely had to deal with the consequences of spyware and other malicious programs that had have crawled onto your computer while you were browsing the Internet. And as a consequences, you’ve probably spent hours and hours trying to get rid of all the spyware and other malicious programs that have taken up residence on your computer.

Even if you think your computer is virus free, you are probably wrong. That is why spyware and viruses are so dangerous; you could be using your computer with no idea that they’re there.

Firewalls Will Protect your Computer

A firewall puts a wall between your home network and the Internet. Just like a real firewall keep fire from spreading from one area to another, a software firewall tries to keep computer viruses from spreading from the Internet onto your home computer or home network.

The firewall itself is a piece of software that is usually run on your router or cable moden. By attaching itself to this hardware, the firewall is the first thing any incoming traffic from the Internet meets.

The firewall’s job is to act to filter all of the traffic from the Internet that comes onto your home network. Whenever a network packet tries to come onto your home network, it has to make it by the firewall first. The firewall will analyse the packet to make sure it isn’t a viruses or some other undesirable communication. If the firewall gives it the all clear, it will let the packet continue on its journey to your home network.

How does a Firewall Know what Traffic is Good?

The firewall will use user-defined parameters and automatic parameters to decide whether the traffic should be let through or labelled dangerous and blocked. As the user, you could configure the firewall to block all traffic coming from a specific IP address. Obviously, you won’t be able to do this for all the malicious sites on the Internet – this list would be far, far too long!

For this reason, the firewall will automatically screen incoming traffic to make sure it corresponds to the kind of traffic you would want to receive by running it through a set of predetermined parameters. For instance, the firewall will usually let traffic sent from a website through to your computer, but it will not let someone remotely login to your computer.

No matter what software or hardware you use, you will always be putting your computer at risk when you connect it to the Internet. You can limit this risk as much as possible, however, by using a firewall. A firewall will let you access all the wonderful resources of the Internet without staying awake all night worrying about your home network.

We All Hate Spam
(presented by www.spyware-remover-free.net - spyware remover)

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

By Steve Dolan

All about Spam

Spam is the scourge of the Internet. Spam, as everyone knows, is the unsolicited advertisements that clog up email inboxes worldwide. Even occasional users of the Internet will know how annoying and time consuming spam can be – when logging onto the Internet to quickly check your email becomes a time consuming process of sorting through offers of romantic encounters and get rich quick schemes.

The First Spam

An immigration law firm in Arizona is popularly described as sending the first intentional, mass commercial email advertising their services over Usenet in 1994. This event is commonly referred to as the ‘Green Card spam’. Since then, the movement of spam over the Internet has exploded.

Why Spam is So Bad

One government study even put the cost of spam to organizations in the United States at $10 billion a year and growing! This number is so high because the cost is not just in lost productivity; money has to be spent to buy more hardware to deal with the influx of email messages, and software and staff assigned specifically to deal with spam. It is clear now that spam accounts for the majority of Internet traffic. Studies have estimated that there are 55 billion spam emails sent every day worldwide – this accounts for 80 to 85 per cent of all incoming email!

Spam makes our lives harder. Instead of being able to quickly respond to emails and get on with
other more important tasks, Spam makes us waste our time sorting through our inbox to differentiate emails from friends and colleagues from badly worded emails trying to sell us the latest fad medicines. While spam may not seem that bad for you, keep in mind that your ISP tries to block most of the spam that is sent your way before it gets a chance to make it into your inbox (which in turn leads to higher ISP costs).

Making Money With Spam

As horrible as spam is, it must be profitable, or else it would not be so prevalent. Although you would never respond to spam, because it is so cheap to send massive amounts of spam, a very low percentage of recipients have to respond for the advertiser to make money. As opposed to direct mailings, which can costs cents per letter, spam costs a fraction of a fraction of a cent per message. Because it is so cheap to send out, you can send out extremely high volumes of advertisements and only require a very small number of recipients to respond.

A World Without Spam

Never responding to offers in spam is the most obvious way to deal with the problem; if there isn’t a market, then no one will bother to send spam. However, as discussed above, because only a small percentage of people need to respond to spam for it to be profitable, this method will never reasonable deal with the issue of spam. In the absence of any strong regulatory programs by the government, Internet users are left trying to find the best filtering software they can to try to stop the spam before it reaches their inboxes.
