Five Ways To Prevent Virus Infections

Some Scrooge ruined my Christmas Holidays. An e-mail
from a suspicious sender appeared in my box the week before
Christmas. As I usually do when I receive unwanted mail, I
attempted to contact the sender with a request to delete my
name from the mailing list. Wrong choice!

An auto responder informed me that the url used in the
heading did not originate the message, knew nothing of the
sender, and furthermore, the e-mail carried a virus. They
advised me to check with my anti-virus software, which I did
immediately. Sure enough the sender had infected my
computer.

Removing the virus required cleaning my hard drive, so I
backed up all important files. Three precious days and four
technicians later, I had a squeaky clean hard drive, but my
usually exuberant Christmas spirit had fizzled. I began re-
installing my basic hardware, then attempted to recover my
backed up files.

Another traumatic experience greeted me. In my haste I had
missed a step and I couldn’t recover the files. I knew McAfee
had a software called “Easy Recovery” that will reach past
hard drive crashes, etc., and recover lost files. I downloaded
Easy Recovery. Another dead end.

The recovered files didn’t include some of my most needed
information, so I had to look up all disks that contained
recent information. Unfortunately, I had failed to save some
critical files. To say my Christmas spirit was on a low limb is
an understatement. Now I’m facing New Year’s Eve and vital
information is still missing.

What kind of monster would do that to other people? Once
a time we opened our e-mails with no fear of damage
to our computers. Unfortunately, today’s technology also
attracts mean spirited people who get their kicks from
inflicting misery on others.

The problem exists and we must find ways to outwit the
virus senders. Several simple cautionary moves will help.

1. IMME!
DIATELY
DELETE any e-mail that carries an
attachment unless you have been advised in advance
and know the person who sent the attachment.

2. IMMEDIATELY DELETE any suspicious e-mail, even
if it does not carry an attachment.

3. Ask your friends to send a separate email in advance of an
attachment, including the name of the attachment.

4. Maintain an effective anti-virus program and check the
web site you downloaded from on a regular basis.
McAfee offers on-line scans when you subscribe to Clinic.

5. Subscribe to newsletters that keep you informed of new
viruses. Again, McAfee keeps a running report on the
latest viruses on their site.

I believe the day will come when people who derive pleasure
from ruining the property of others can be tracked down. Until
that day comes, we must use every caution at our disposal to
outwit the monsters.
