The Different Types Of Internet Identity Theft Crimes

Internet Identity theft scams are becoming more worrying for individuals and business companies these days. With the advancement in technology, it has become much easier to find out personal information in any way possible in order to gain access to another person’s money and property. As a result, there are several types of crimes associated with Internet identity theft. The common ones, such as account takeover, fraudulent transactions and new account creation are discussed in detail as below.

Account Takeover

This type of Internet identity theft involves assuming the identity from a single account and using the account to make purchases. The theft of the account information can be accomplished in many forms. In some cases, a criminal needing to increase his or her stock of cases even use a prior stolen identity to help steal more. One classic example is site cloning. This is a different form of the chat room method where a merchant website will have been cloned and will mimic the completion of a e-commerce purchase transaction, including the response of an email receipt. The only problem is that the product will never be delivered.

Fraudulent Transactions

Another kind of Internet identity theft that occurred commonly is fraudulent transactions. To be more specific, a fraudulent transaction involves an individual filling out an order form as though they were someone else, the merchant accepting the order and the shipment of goods or services that the suspect can receive. One key difference from a traditional in-store fraud is that the criminal can “hit” a lot of different merchants and do a lot of damage very fast in the virtual world of the Internet. An Internet identity theft criminal doesn’t have to drive between merchants, risk being identified by a sales clerk, doesn’t have to be videotaped by closed circuit cameras, in order to commit the identity theft. Compared to robbing a jewellery store or bank, this form of fraud is nearly perfect!

New Account Creation

ount creation is a regular form of Internet identity theft that involves stealing sufficient identifying information about an individual to open new credit account or bank accounts. The information needed to create new accounts can be gathered from a variety of sources including trash bins, legitimate files, or even public records.
