Workplace Violence Remains a Business Concern

From all available research and recent studies, Workplace
Violence continues to be a major business security threat facing
the workplace today followed by Business Continuity/Business
Interruption and Terrorism, Pinkerton Security Survey. Dr. Robert
F. Hester in article entitled: Business Continuity for Small
Businesses said, Safety, security and preparedness aren’t
routinely a focus in our lives. Being on guard is not something
Americans are used to or like doing. Still danger and threat
never goes away; only fades in memory.”

The Emerging Threat

The use of email and the internet by disgruntled employees who
wish to cause a person or a business harm is the new emerging
threat causing business executives considerable angst, so say a
variety of current surveys and research.

While traditional company approaches suggest that the
problem typically deals with the hostile behavior of a
disgruntled employee or the escalation of disputes between
employees; security directors also include the risk posed by
the armed robber and the opportunity criminals as workplace
security concerns.

That was the traditional perspective. Not factored into the
traditional equation is the calculated threat posed by the
“Insider” who has privileged access to the company Intra net,
business email, company files, remote access and management, and
oversight via his or her computer. The advent of remote access
has further muddied the waters.

New, non-traditional approaches to the Prevention of Workplace
Violence and Workplace Security do not disqualify any potential
threat to the safety and security of the workplace, hence the
discovery of new more potent threats. These new approaches
require an analytical perspective that looks beyond the walls and
into the world of minimi!
zed dete
ction and maximum damage.

No longer should responsible officials limit their scope to
preventing escalation of violence between employees; companies
are at risk. New, harder-to-detect methods have arisen for
employees to exact revenge or “make a point”.

One new retaliatory measure at employees’ disposal involves
network “privileged access”. Devastating damage can be inflicted
using such access. While we await the other “Threats from Within
- the Terrorist” to strike, the new “lying in wait” culprit is
the “privileged user” who might be a current employee, former
employee, vendor or contractor with access…who has an ax to
grind or score to settle.

What makes this perpetrator extremely dangerous and drastically
effective is access. The physical access controls that deny
unauthorized intruders do not deny the privileged user access.

“For many years external security threats received more attention
than internal security threats, but the focus has changed. While
viruses, worms, Trojans and DoS are serious, attacks perpetrated
by people with trusted insider status - employee, ex-employees,
contractors and business partners-pose a far greater threat to
organizations in terms of potential cost per occurrence and total
potential cost than attacks mounted from the outside”. (”The
Enemy Inside”, Kristin Gallina Lovejoy, CSO, April 2006).

Following this thought process, one quickly surmises the
magnitude and capability of this perpetrator’s reach. Gone are
days of risking exposure; this perpetrator chooses to wait for
the opportunity, lay a trap, sabotage systems, disrupt operations
and even transfer company files to competitors. “Getting even”
takes on new dimensions.

And so, now we have a new, broader profile and threat to contend
with. The traditional “going postal” profile: Males, 17-60 years
of age, holds a technical position, being married… does not
matter any more.

The new profile is racially and ethnically dive!
rse and
can come
from a broad pool of employees. These are the new suspects.

Common amongst perpetrators, though, is the perception of
victimization and revenge and the facility of theft of
information, conflicting interest, abuse of privileges and
disgruntled behavior. Whereas the act of violence is physical in
orientation, the Internet or Computer Predator chooses this
medium of retaliation that is cleaner and has a faceless victim.

Case Study:

An employee of a major government agency, feeling victimized by
coworkers and sensing no intervention by management, resorts to
acts of retaliation and revenge.

Initially he adapts to the common threats of physical harm, which
include use of his vehicle, and verbal threats through the
escalatory phases, which included death threats. Fortunately, he
did not ever get the chance to deliver on his believed threat.
While searching the internet for bomb making materials, his
unsuspecting supervisor happened on his computer terminal
accidentally, as he returned from an early lunch. He found the
employee browsing at what appeared to be a bomb-making website.

Sensing a serious breach of user privileges, superiors were
notified and the computer was isolated and confiscated. An
examination of the hard drive revealed an interesting forensic
footprint.

Upon investigation, it was disclosed that the employee was on the
last phase of his bomb-making venture, having left the purchase
of the last ingredients as the last step.

The employee admitted to his actions but denied his intentions.
Because his intent was not clearly established, no criminal
charges were lodged. Suffice it to say, anyone can see the
potential for, and potency of the power of abuse, for a computer
with its built-in tools.

Why does this new approach matter? It matters because the
workplace is the most exposed target for any predator with a
revenge motivation, a terrorist bent or driven by greed and
manipulation. Counterm!
easures
call for a return to astute
vigilance and new policies.

What can you implement immediately? Change passwords for ex-and
former employees. Lock out contractors, vendors and business
partners at the conclusion of official business dealings, and
establish clear policies, guidelines and procedures - with
consequences for breaches and criminal violations.

To efficiently evaluate all visible and camouflaged areas of
risk, create experience-based policy development by consultation
with a qualified security consultant.

When the policies have been set, secure the mindset and daily
habits of managers and employees with follow-up implementation
and education by the security consultant.

Not every company is fated to become a victim statistic in a
publicized study or survey. Use a broad, new approach. In
addition to securing against Workplace Violence using traditional
methods, protect against the new, emerging threats that cause
concerned managers considerable angst, engage a Security
Consultant when necessary, and protect the health of employees
and your business.

You May Lose Traffic if You Do Not Read This
(presented by www.spyware-remover-free.net - spyware remover)

What many internet users do not know is that many websites contain malicious code on their home pages. Most people never know that they are at risk. The people at McAfee have come up with a neat tool called SiteAdvisor. This is a toolbar that tells you the safety rating of the site you are about to visit. When you do a search on any search engine, SiteAdvisor automatically puts either a green check, a yellow exclamation point, or a red X next to every site.

This tool will let you see exactly why each site has its rating. It will even tell you how many e-mails you will receive per month if you sign up for the newsletter. SiteAdvisor will also tell you if the e-mails you will receive are spam-like or not. The list goes on for all of the great features of this new security tool. The most important feature is that it is free!

What does all this mean to someone who owns a website? Well let’s say someone owns a site that ranks highly on Google. If they continually send their mailing list subscribers junk e-mail, their ranking will decrease from green to yellow or even red. Now people who are using this toolbar will see what their site is about and not click their link. There are plenty of other things people can do to not get a good rating. I suggest that you familiarize yourself with them, and make sure you are not currently using any marketing methods that could hurt you in the future.

Using Wireless Network - What Security Issues?
(presented by www.spyware-remover-free.net - spyware remover)

By Eugene Chai

The internet and wireless age have made life easy for all of us now that we can respond to our emails and surf the internet while we sip a latte, wait for a meeting, or communicate almost anywhere and anytime without the hassles of wires. Unfortunately, these benefits have come with a cost. Our love for the convenience, freedom, and flexibility of being wireless has made us potential targets for hackers, fraudsters who can connect to our computers just as easily as we connect to the Internet.

Strange E-mails Without Attachments Are Not Necessarily Harmless
(presented by www.spyware-remover-free.net - spyware remover)

By Coenraad De Beer

Even e-mails from trusted sources cannot be trusted these days. What we never know is whether the PC of the trusted source is infected with e-mail worms and spam bots sending out these e-mails without the consent of the PC owner. So your e-mail may come from a trusted source but is the source still trustworthy? By that I do not imply that your best friend turned against you and is sending you harmful and indecent e-mails. Your best friend may be totally innocent and unaware of the fact that a virus turned his/her computer into a spamming zombie. The problem we are facing here is to determine whether a human or an infected PC sent the e-mail. A spam bot normally sends e-mails that are totally out of character, e-mails that no decent human will send, especially not your best friend.

But you need to open the e-mail to determine its contents. The perception still exists that e-mails without attachments are harmless and that it is safe to open them. But it is much safer to view the source of the e-mail in order to view its contents without opening it. This is not always possible with web based e-mail services but it is possible with e-mail clients like Outlook, Outlook Express and Mozilla Thunderbird. Viewing the source of an e-mail enables you to read the body of the e-mail without any trouble, just like when you actually opened it. The biggest advantage of this method is that any harmful scripts or attachments embedded into the e-mail cannot be run or executed while viewing the source of the e-mail. Some e-mails may appear scrambled when viewing its source, this is when the e-mail only consists of an image embedded into it and most e-mails compiled this way are normally spam. Disabling JavaScript in your e-mail client will also make it safer to open e-mails, in fact very few people use JavaScript in their e-mails, so I do not even see any sense in enabling something that is never really used.

Many people may argue that they open hundreds of spam e-mails, without attachments, on a daily basis !
without
any harm done to their PC. This is true, but it is not only about the harm it can do to your PC, some of these e-mails contain content that is offensive to sensitive people and harmful to minors. Other e-mails may not contain offensive content, but they can easily make you a victim of advance fee fraud and phishing scams if you are not familiar with the characteristics of these scams. They play with your mind, abuse your feelings, it is a case of psychological warfare, brainwashing. They want you to step into their trap, but they need to deceive you first, gain control over your mind in order to achieve it.

It is not hard to identify spam these days, but people still go through the trouble of opening them while knowing that they are spam. Why open something if you know for a fact that it contains useless information? Have you ever thought of it as the spammer exercising control over your actions? Why do you think do they send you so many senseless e-mails everyday, e-mails that seem to be completely harmless? The only way of making you comfortable with something is to bombard you with thousands of the same kind of e-mail over and over again until you are so conditioned that you no longer can distinguish legitimate e-mails from fraudulent ones.

Spam is no longer aimed at damaging your computer, no those days are long gone. On the contrary spammers need your PC to help them distribute their unwanted e-mails, so they will not harm it, they will rather infiltrate it. They infiltrate your PC to steal your information, invade your privacy and involve you in their devious crimes. Next time you receive a strange looking e-mail think twice before opening it, whether it has attachments or not.

Simple steps to remove the spyware of your pc
(presented by www.spyware-remover-free.net - spyware remover)

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

By William Redants

This are the most common tasks necessary to keep your PC free of spyware

Oh No — you just clicked that executable and the spyware is all over your PC.
Hereīs what to do.

1.- Admin your mistake. Pledge never again to click “YES” when an IEpop-up window says, “Your system might be compromised!!! Repair now?”.

2.- Check the Add or Remove Programs control panel for anything suspicious. Only the friendliest spyware/adware programs will show up in the control panel, but itīs the most reliable way to remove anything that dows, as anti-spyware tools tend to leave some scraps behind. Remove anything thatīs suspicious. If you have trouble with the removal, try the same procedure in Safe Mode. (Running in Safe Mode is good advice for any of the below steps. Because Safe Mode runs only absolutely necessary apps, you may have more control over a badly infected system.)

3.- Run a complete antivirus scan. Make sure your advanced scanning options are set to the highest level of protection. Scan inside compresed files and turn any heuristic scanning options to maximum protection.

4.- Run Spybot Search & Destroy (one of the best anti-spyware programs and is freeware http://www.safer-networking.org) after updating the program definition files. It may require several reboots to flush out all the spyware in a computer seriously infected.

5.- Run a second anti-spyware scanner, such a PC Health PlanTM Professional Grade Anti-Spyware tool
This will help eliminate any hiddenn apps that Spybot didnīt catch.

6.- If youīre still infested, run HijackThis! to generate a log of active system processes. If you canīt interpret the log with the help of online searches, post your log file at http://forums.spywareinfo.com with a polite request for help. Someone will usually respond within an hour, advising you on wich entries in the HijackThis! log you should disable, or what custom removal program might help your case.

7.- If youīre still infected, fire up Windows System Restore, and roll your system back to a distant checkpoint from a time before your PC was infected.

8.- If spyware keeps popping up, you are probably hosed. Your best bet at this point is back up your data files, and wipe the drive, reinstalling Windows from scratch.

Be smart and good luck.
