As an extensive user on the Internet, and through experience I have come to perform virus and spyware scans using two separate packages on alternate days. One package is a mainstream commercial package from a global software company that acts as the main system monitor.
The second anti virus & anti spyware package is from a smaller but reputable company that acts as an independent system-scanning programme, activated when required. It must be from a totally separate company from the main software to be effective. This is not just because of the separate definition files, but more importantly is the differences in the detection algorithms they will have.
You may find that during a scan the software you are scanning with may not recognise the infected file if its definition has not been loaded on to your system yet and its detection algorithm can not detect the malicious program structure, but your other protection software monitoring your system in the background will h!

pick it up as a recognised or possible threat based on its different detection algorithm. This has happened to me twice during the last month when performing this type of scan where the act of scanning an infected file has triggered the alert on my main virus protection software.
This little trick was recommended to me by a systems programmer from a large commercial software house writing virus protection software. Many virus & spyware writers develop their programmes to operate not just against the operating system but also to try and defeat a leading protection software brand they are focussing on.
You can pick up a reputable second anti virus and anti spyware detection program very cheaply, or for free for a trial period. You never know it could save you a lot of time and money in the near future.
So in summary are two anti virus & spyware packages better than one. In my experience it has to be most defiantly. You don
