How To Prevent Getting Viruses From Your E-mails

Most of us know what viruses, worms, Trojan horse, and Spywares can do to our computer, to give you brief information viruses can destroy your data files, usually the system files and you can’t boot your computer.
Worms can do that too, but actually it will steal your important files such as text and document files, so be careful on saving your bank account or user/password information on your PC.
Trojan horse is like Spyware too but this software is on disguise like CIA operatives, they pretend to be useful and friendly softwares but then opens up a portal/port for the hacker to get in to your PC.
Spyware is similar to a Trojan horse in that also users unwittingly install the product when they install something else. A common way to become a victim of spyware is to download certain peer-to-peer file swapping products that are available today.
Any software that covertly gathers user information through the user’s Internet connection without their knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware application are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the Internet; however, it should be noted that the majority of shareware and freeware application do not come with spyware. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.
Now back to the topic, we love to open our e-mails specially when friends will send us some pictures or our co-worker will send us documents like resumes and other presentations. There are few things we have to know when downloading files from our e-mail.
1.) First we have to check the file extension of the attachment file. Here are the common lists of file extensions that we’ll get:
These file extensions are safe to download
.txt = Text files
.doc = Document file
.jpg = !
Picture
file (JPEG)
.gif = Graphic file (GIF)
.xls = Excel Files
These are some of the common file extensions that you have to be aware of downloading:
.exe = Executable file (program)
.vbs = Visual Basic program
.pif = Program information file (Win 3.1)
.com = Command file (program)
.bas = BASIC program
2.) Check if there’s double extension for example:
mypicture.jpg.pif - as you can see on the file name it says .jpg but it’s actually .pif, the mypicture.jpg is the file name and the .pif is the file extension.
Document1.doc.exe - as you can see on the file name it says .doc but it’s actually .exe, the Document1.doc is the file name and the .exe is the file extension.
Be careful on this because people are trying to deceived you with false file extensions.
3.) If you accidentally click on one of those and your not aware of the file extension of that data. Make sure not to press open button because it will automatically install or execute that file. What you have to do is save it on your dive first then check the extension first before you open it.
4.) Scan your PC monthly with your anti-virus to make sure of your security and virus free.
