Spyware Remover

Your Personal Information May Be Public

It turns out that some county records offices have been scanning and publishing records on the Internet. While this is helpful, it also discloses personal information such as name, address, and social security number just to mention a few. I noticed that one county that had been notified of this issue stated there were several thousand records that contained personal information. Multiply this by the number of county web sites on the Internet and the information breach is staggering.

This emphasizes the fact that most people are not thinking of security and there is no national standard to protect your personal data and how it can be used. Our government continues to not pass specific legislation to protect a person’s personal information. This is just another incident to add to the growing list of information disclosure of individuals in the United States.

What should you do if you believe that your personal information may of been disclosed? First you can do a Google search on some of your key information. I would recommend not entering your full account numbers when doing this. I would also check with your county office to see if they have published public records to the Internet and if they contain personal information.

You can obtain a free copy of your credit report from http://www.annualcreditreport.com/. This is a free service by the credit bureaus where you can get a free credit report once a year from all three bureaus. If you find any information that indicates fraud, put a fraud alert on your credit report. Be sure to get any fraudulent information removed from your credit report. You can contact the toll-free fraud number of any of the three consumer reporting companies to place a fraud alert on your credit report. They are: Equifax, (800) 525-6285; Experian (888) 397-3742; and TransUnion, (800) 680-7289.
