What is a Computer Virus?

In order to protect our computers and data from viruses, we need to understand what they are and how they work. Viruses are also known as malware, short for malicious software. In other words their intent is to do damage to your computer. Virus is a broad term however, and there are actually several different types of malware.

Viruses

A virus is essentially a program or bit of code that it unwanted and runs in your computer, usually wreaking various types of havoc. Typically a virus will come hidden in another program, or even an image. You may have downloaded the ‘host’ program yourself or opened it as a file attachment in an email.

Once a virus has infected your computer it waits for a particular trigger, such as a certain date and time, at which point it does its damage, also knows as its payload. A payload can be anything from a message which pops up on your screen to the deletion of key operating system files.

Viruses are the scourge of the Internet today and most do come in the form of email attachments. It is wise to run a virus scan on any email attachments, particularly executable programs, when possible.
