How To Stop Pop Ups

I’m sure you have experienced a pop up ad attack haven’t you? Most people feel like they are playing “Missle Command” with the mouse and others are furiously hitting Ctrl-W closing the windows as soon as they pop up (this helps for closing those pop ups that fill your screen and you can’t x out of them). I have had this happen one too may times for me and I realized I needed to research how to stop pop ups.

Pop ups can be a real hassle. They can harm your computer by eating up your computer’s resources and causing it to shut down or crash. Excessive pop ups may mean that you have adware or spyware installed on your computer and are eating up your resources as well. Sometimes you can get a reverse whammy whereas pop ups are made to look like real computer alerts from your pc, but when you click them, they install spyware or adware to create more pop ups. It is insidious isn’t it?

In my search for how to stop pop ups, I have found there are about roughly 140 anti-popup software products to choose from. Overwhelming? Yes. But I’ll help you narrow it down. I have learned there are 4 categories of popup blockers. They are either intelligent, trainable, serial or embedded. The intelligent ones can tell the difference between pop ups and valid windows. Most pop ups are in fact new windows, but more on that later. Trainable pop up blockers have to be trained as to which pop ups are valid and which or not. Serial pop ups just plain mow down any new window period…like throwing out the baby with the bath water kind of deal. Embedded pop up blockers are installed with the browser you are using or in a toolbar you downloaded. However these are just as unbiased as the serial blocker. It’s really up to personal preference what kind of blocker you want.

Remember how I mentioned that pop ups are in fact just plain new windows? There is not much discrepancy between pop ups and newly opened windows when it comes to appearance as much as user initiation and behaviour. If you cli!

ink and a new window appears, most likely that is a valid window. If a new window opens immediately after the parent page opens, this is called an onload pop up ad. If a new window opens with no user initiation, this is a delayed pop up ad. If you are leaving a page by closing the parent page or leaving the site using the same browser and a new window opens, this is an unload pop up. The more sophisticated pop ups can be camouflaged in that it opens along with the parent window, but within the parent window’s borders. The intelligent pop up blocker is the only category qualified enough to differentiate between pop ups and valid windows.

However, there are a new breed of “pop ups”, although they are really not windows. It is a method utilizing dhtml layering. Ever go to Yahoo and see someone or thing walk across the site or maybe a “post-it” looks like it’s stuck to the page? Or how about the ones that slide into your screen. These can be stopped as well by intelligent pop up blockers.

If you don’t care about blocking valid pop ups then by all means get one of those free pop up blockers. Just realize that nothing is truly for free–there may be adware, spyware or some sort of application the provider wants to place on your pc. However, if you want to effectively stop certain pop ups and cover all the pop up bases, your best bet is to get an intelligent pop up blocker.

Well, I hope I have at least made your search on how to stop pop ups less time consuming. If you do decide to purchase an intelligent pop up blocker, you now only have about 50 intelligent pop up blockers to research. Or, you can simply trust me (and some reputable software critics) and use what I use.
